Twist and Shout!

“I have always loved the idea of achieving fluidity with metal because the gracefulness of the form can contradict the hard edge that the material sustains,” says Miami’s Michael Wolk, who designed this powder-coated steel étagère for Johnston Casuals. “I am fond of repeating geometries. You see this in many of the furniture pieces I design.” His favorite of the pieces he’s created to date? “ at would be like saying which one of my children is my favorite!”

Captain of Industry

The words “limited edition” and “one off” furniture have become familiar catch phrases for serious followers of design, but back in the 1970s when Michael Wolk graduated from college, the climate for designing artful furniture was barren. “I’m an industrial designer by training,” he explains. “I came out of college with the dreams of creating unique pieces, but there was such a slim market that only a few big names, like Wendell Castle and George Nakashima, were successful at it—and only modestly so compared to now.” In his interiors, such as the Trump Royale, Wolk relies on architectural detailing for achieving authenticity and electricity.
